Damasus I
305 — 384
Bishop of Rome from 366 to 384, Damasus opposed the heresies of Apollinarianism and Macedonianism and steered the Roman Church through bitter factional conflict following his contested election. He supported Jerome's Latin translation of Scripture, presided over the 382 Council of Rome that fixed the biblical canon, and personally composed verse inscriptions to honor martyrs' tombs across the catacombs.
