One of the earliest African-born bishops of Rome, Victor (d. 199) is best known for the Quartodeciman controversy, in which he severed communion with the churches of Asia Minor over their practice of celebrating Easter on 14 Nisan rather than on a Sunday. He also began the Roman Church's shift from Greek to Latin as its liturgical language.
