Sylvester I served as Bishop of Rome from 314 to 335, during Constantine's reign. Very little is known of his personal life, but his pontificate oversaw the Church's emergence from persecution into public life, including Constantine's funding of the great Roman basilicas — the Lateran, Old St. Peter's, and Santa Croce in Gerusalemme.
