Julius I
280 — 352 · Feast day: April 12
Julius served as Bishop of Rome from 337 to 352, defending Nicene orthodoxy against the Arian faction at its imperial height. He sheltered Athanasius in Rome, convened a synod in 342 that overturned his deposition, and secured canons at the Council of Sardica establishing Rome as a court of appeal for deposed bishops.
