A Syrian-born Pope known for his courage and administrative skill, Gregory III was the last non-European pope for over a millennium. Early Life
Born in Syria around 700 AD. Moved to Rome and entered the clergy, rising through the ranks of the Church.
Turning Point
Elected Pope in 731 by popular acclamation upon the death of Gregory II. Immediately faced the Byzantine iconoclasm controversy and Lombard threats.
Legacy
Defended sacred images against Emperor Leo III, appealed to Charles Martel for military aid against the Lombards, and commissioned St. Boniface's missionary work in Germany until his death in 741.
