Historical Context
Pope Hyginus (d. c. 142) was the ninth Bishop of Rome, serving from approximately 138 to 142. According to the 'Liber Pontificalis,' he was a philosopher from Athens who brought intellectual sophistication to the young Roman Church during a period of significant theological challenge. Hyginus's pontificate coincided with the arrival in Rome of prominent Gnostic teachers, including Valentinus and Cerdo, whose heterodox teachings posed serious challenges to orthodox Christian belief. While the details of his response are not fully documented, his episcopate represents an important early moment in the Church's confrontation with Gnosticism — the great theological rival of orthodox Christianity in the second century.
