"I shall spend every moment loving."
Saint Bernadette was a poor, uneducated, and asthmatic girl of fourteen when the Virgin Mary appeared to her in a dirty grotto in Lourdes, France. Between February and July 1858, she experienced eighteen apparitions of a 'beautiful lady' who revealed herself as 'The Immaculate Conception.' Despite intense skepticism from her family, clergy, and civil authorities, Bernadette steadfastly held to her story with simple, disarming truth. At the Lady's instruction, she uncovered a miraculous spring that has since healed countless pilgrims. Fleeing the fame she never sought, she entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, where she lived a hidden life of prayer and service, enduring painful illness with great patience until her death at age thirty-five.

The Boly Mill was the birthplace of Bernadette Subirous and she lived there happily for the first ten years of her life until increasing poverty forced the family to move to poorer accommodation.
