Saint Stephen
Deacon
Sanctified Life
1 — 36
Greece
"Lord, do not hold this sin against them."
Saint Stephen holds the distinguished title of Protomartyr, the first to shed his blood for Christ. Chosen as one of the first seven deacons to serve the widows and the poor in Jerusalem, he was a man 'full of grace and power' who worked great wonders among the people. His wisdom and spirit in debate enraged members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen, who accused him of blasphemy. Dragged before the Sanhedrin, Stephen delivered a courageous defense of the faith, tracing salvation history to Jesus. As his enemies prepared to stone him, he looked up and saw the heavens open, crying out, 'Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!' He died asking forgiveness for his executioners, with the future Apostle Paul witnessing his death.
