Hyginus

A Greek philosopher from Athens, Hyginus served as the ninth Bishop of Rome from c. 138 to 142. He organized the clergy into grades and instituted the role of godparents at baptism to support the newly baptized. His pontificate saw Gnostic teachers Valentinus and Cerdo active in Rome.
