Hormisdas

Hormisdas

450523 · Feast day: August 6

Pope Hormisdas served as Bishop of Rome from 514 to 523 and ended the Acacian Schism — a 35-year rupture between Rome and Constantinople that began in 484. Through persistent diplomacy and the doctrinal 'Formula of Hormisdas,' he secured the Eastern Church's formal acceptance of the Council of Chalcedon and the primacy of the See of Rome. His son Silverius later became pope.

Dionysius

Dionysius

200268 · Feast day: December 26

A pope of the late third century who rebuilt the Roman Church after the Valerian persecution. He reorganized the city's parishes, ransomed Christian captives from Cappadocia at his own expense, and intervened in a theological dispute with Dionysius of Alexandria, insisting that the three divine persons must not be so sharply distinguished as to collapse into tritheism.
