A Dominican lay brother of mixed African and Spanish descent who faced severe racial discrimination. He served the poor and sick of Lima with incredible humility and miraculous powers, including bilocation and healing. He is often depicted with a broom, symbolizing his sanctity in menial tasks.

Born to Ana Velázquez, a freed black slave, and Juan de Porres, a Spanish nobleman who refused to acknowledge his son due to his dark skin.
Apprentice Barber
Apprenticed to a barber-surgeon, learning to cut hair, perform minor surgery, and prepare medicines for the poor.
Joins Dominicans
Entered the Dominican Convent of the Rosary as a donado (lay helper), forbidden from full brotherhood due to his race.
Professes Vows
After nine years of exemplary service, the prior allowed him to profess vows as a lay brother, overriding racial restrictions.
Infirmarian
Appointed to care for sick friars. His nursing skills and miraculous healings drew people from across Lima seeking his help.
