The Saint's Path

Tracing the major movements of Martin de Porres's life.
Historical Context
Martín de Porres (1579–1639) was a Peruvian Dominican lay brother of mixed African and Spanish descent whose extraordinary charity, humility, and reported miraculous gifts made him one of the most beloved saints of the Americas and a powerful symbol of the Church's universality across racial boundaries. Born in Lima, Peru, to a Spanish nobleman, Don Juan de Porres, and Ana Velázquez, a freed slave of African and possibly indigenous descent, Martín was raised primarily by his mother in poverty after his father initially refused to acknowledge his illegitimate, mixed-race children. He was apprenticed to a barber-surgeon — a combination profession that included basic medical care — and developed skills in herbal medicine and surgery that he would use throughout his life. At age fifteen, Martín entered the Dominican Priory of the Rosary in Lima, initially as a lay helper (donado) because Peru's racial laws at the time prohibited people of African or indigenous descent from becoming full members of religious orders. He eventually became a lay brother and spent the rest of his life at the priory, serving as barber, wardrobe-keeper, and infirmarian. Martín's charity extended to every form of need. He established an orphanage and foundling hospital for the abandoned children of Lima — reportedly the first institution of its kind in the Americas. He distributed food and medicine to the poor from the priory's door daily. His care extended even to animals — he was reported to have operated what amounted to an animal hospital and was said to be able to communicate with animals, including mice and rats, even negotiating with them to leave the priory's food stores in exchange for food set aside for them outside. Numerous miraculous phenomena were attributed to Martín during his lifetime, including bilocation, aerial flight, luminous ecstasies, and instantaneous cures, as attested by hundreds of witnesses at his beatification proceedings. He was canonized by Pope John XXIII on May 6, 1962, and is the patron saint of mixed-race people, barbers, innkeepers, public health workers, and all those seeking racial harmony.
