The Saint's Path

Tracing the major movements of Sergius of Radonezh's life.
Historical Context
Sergius of Radonezh (1314–1392) is the most venerated saint in Russian Orthodoxy and the spiritual architect of the monastic revival that transformed the religious and cultural life of medieval Russia. His influence on Russian Christianity is so profound that he has been called the 'Builder of Russia' — not in a political sense, but in the spiritual sense of providing the moral and spiritual foundation upon which the emerging Russian nation was built. Born Bartholomew to a boyar (noble) family near Rostov, the young boy reportedly struggled with learning until a miraculous encounter with a mysterious monk granted him the ability to read and understand Scripture. After his parents' death, he and his brother Stephen withdrew into the forests northeast of Moscow to live as hermits. Stephen soon left for a monastery in Moscow, but Bartholomew remained alone in the wilderness, taking monastic vows and the name Sergius. Gradually, other monks were drawn to Sergius, and around 1337 he founded the Trinity Monastery (later the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius), which became the spiritual heart of Russia and remains the most important monastery in the Russian Orthodox Church today. Sergius introduced the communal (cenobitic) form of monasticism to Russia, replacing the older tradition of individual hermits living near each other with an organized community sharing common worship, meals, and labor. This reform, based on the model of Basil of Caesarea, transformed Russian monasticism. Sergius's moral authority extended into the political sphere. In 1380, Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy came to seek his blessing before confronting the Mongol Golden Horde at the Battle of Kulikovo — the first major Russian victory over the Mongols. According to tradition, Sergius not only blessed the campaign but sent two of his monks, Peresvet and Oslyabya, to fight, one of whom began the battle in single combat. Though Mongol rule would continue for another century, Kulikovo was a turning point in Russian national consciousness. Sergius died in 1392 and was canonized in 1452. The Trinity Lavra he founded remained a center of Russian spirituality, art (the great icon painter Andrei Rublev worked there), and education through the centuries, surviving even the Soviet period to emerge as a living symbol of Russian Orthodox faith.
