"If you ask how such things occur, seek the answer in God's grace, not in doctrine; in the longing of the will, not in the understanding."

A Franciscan theologian often compared to Aquinas for his intellect, but with a greater emphasis on the will and love. He served as Minister General of the Franciscans, steering the order through internal crises. His 'Journey of the Mind to God' is a classic of mystical theology.

Historical Context
Bonaventure (1221–1274), born Giovanni di Fidanza, was an Italian Franciscan friar, cardinal, theologian, and philosopher known as the 'Seraphic Doctor.' Alongside his contemporary Thomas Aquinas, he represents one of the two great intellectual peaks of thirteenth-century Scholasticism, though their approaches differed profoundly — where Aquinas built on Aristotle by emphasizing reason, Bonaventure followed Augustine by emphasizing the soul's mystical journey toward God. Born in Bagnoregio in central Italy, Bonaventure entered the Franciscan Order around 1243 and studied at the University of Paris, where he eventually occupied one of the two Franciscan chairs of theology. His theological masterworks include the 'Breviloquium' (a compact systematic theology), the 'Collationes in Hexaemeron' (lectures on the six days of creation), and above all the 'Itinerarium Mentis in Deum' (The Journey of the Mind into God), written during a retreat on Mount La Verna, the site where Francis received the stigmata. This mystical treatise traces the soul's ascent from the contemplation of nature through self-knowledge to union with the divine. In 1257, Bonaventure was elected Minister General of the Franciscan Order at a critical moment when the order was torn by internal disputes between those who insisted on Francis's original vision of absolute poverty and those who argued for a more moderate interpretation. Bonaventure's moderate governance and his official biography of Francis — the 'Legenda Maior' — helped stabilize the order, though his decision to order the destruction of earlier biographies of Francis remains controversial. Bonaventure was named Cardinal Bishop of Albano and played a significant role at the Second Council of Lyon (1274), working toward the reunification of the Eastern and Western churches. He died during the Council and was canonized in 1482. His intellectual legacy offers a vision of theology as not merely an academic discipline but a pathway of love — the mind's journey, guided by grace, toward the contemplation of God.

"The 'Transfixe', a classic prayer of St. Bonaventure found in the Roman Missal."

Pierce, O most sweet Lord Jesus, my inmost soul with the most joyous and healthful wound of Thy love, and with true, calm and most holy apostolic charity, that my soul may ever languish and melt with entire love and longing for Thee, may yearn for Thee and for Thy courts, may long to be dissolved and to be with Thee.
